CLINICAL EXPERIENCE
GENERAL OBSTETRICS & GYNAECOLOGY
I have received all my postgraduate training in the UK. I had thorough training and wide experience in all aspects of routine, high risk and operative obstetrics. Gynaecologically, besides my special interest in reproductive medicine, I have wide experience in general gynaecology, both medically and surgically. In my current job, besides my work in reproductive medicine, I have weakly commitments to obstetric and gynaecology in- and out-patients as well as general gynaecology operating lists.

REPRODUCTIVE MEDICINE

My subspecialist interest is reproductive medicine. I am experienced in all aspects of reproductive medicine and surgery, as well as infertility-related diagnostic and interventional radiology and ultrasound. My experience includes infertility counselling and work-up, ovulation induction, intrauterine insemination, in-vitro fertilisation (IVF), intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), gamete donation and tubal reconstructive microsurgery.

I am currently the Director of Assisted Conception Services at the Birmingham Women's Hospital, a tertiary referral centre in Central England, serving a population base of 6 million and receiving over 1000 referrals in reproductive medicine per annum. I have special interest and expertise in setting up new infertility units and in fact I was responsible for the setting-up, organisation, and running of the clinical aspects of the first IVF unit in the University of Birmingham back in 1994.

MALE INFERTILITY
I am the chief clinician in charge of male factor infertility at the Assisted Conception Unit. I am experienced in the investigation and treatment of male factor, including performing PESA (percutaneous epididymal sperm aspiration), TESA (testicular sperm aspiration), and TESE (testicular sperm extraction) as well as open testicular biopsy under both general or local anaesthesia. I am also experienced in the clinical and genetic aspects of ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection).

MINIMAL ACCESS SURGERY
I am experienced in performing diagnostic and operative hysteroscopy and laparoscopy for infertility-related disorders, and have level 3 RCOG-endoscopy accreditation.
My experience in operative hysteroscopy includes laser resection of uterine septum, submucous fibroids and intrauterine synechiae as well as tubal catheterisation. In operative laparoscopy I am experienced in ovarian biopsy, laser adhesiolysis, ovarian drilling, and laparoscopic treatment of ectopic pregnancy. I am also experienced in out-patient hysteroscopy.

IMAGING EXPERIENCE
I have special expertise in performing selective salpingography under x ray control for the diagnosis and treatment of proximal tubal occlusion.
I am also experienced in performing both diagnostic and interventional ultrasound scanning in obstetrics and gynaecology. In gynaecology and reproductive medicine I am experienced in diagnostic sonography as well as ultrasound-directed egg-collection, embryo-transfer and pelvic cyst drainage. In obstetrics my experience includes early pregnancy assessment, antenatal booking scans, fetal biometry, Doppler flow imaging, biophysical profile scoring and amniocentesis.

OPERATIVE EXPERIENCE
I am a competent abdominal and vaginal surgeon and have wide surgical experience in performing general gynaecological operations as well as reproductive surgery. I am also experienced in radical pelvic surgery for benign conditions such as surgery for frozen pelvis, extensive endometriosis and pelvic adhesions.
In obstetrics, I also have wide experience in instrumental and operative deliveries. This includes management of rupture uterus and caesarean hysterectomy.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

UNDERGRADUATE TEACHING EXPERIENCE
As a University Senior Lecturer, I am responsible for both formal and informal 5th year medical students teaching in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. I also lecture to the 2nd year students on the Anatomy and Physiology; Endocrinology; and Law and Ethics modules.

POSTGRADUATE TEACHING EXPERIENCE
Postgraduate teaching is the part of my job I enjoy most and consider it the logical extension of medical training, research and practice. I have taken a particular interest in training for the MRCOG, and have so far published 4 books in this area, and they are on the RCOG recommended reading list. Twice-a-year I organise a Part 2 MRCOG written course and an OSCE course at the Birmingham Women's Hospital. I also lecture on the Birmingham theoretical MRCOG 2 Course, and have been invited regularly to lecture at the MRCOG Courses at the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, London; Keele University, Stoke; Saudi Arabia; Egypt; and Trinidad.

MD THESIS
I have a "Doctor of Medicine" degree from the University of Birmingham (1999), and the results from my thesis have been published in papers in international peer-reviewed journals.
The hypothesis tested in this thesis was that the simplification of various IVF steps is consistent with successful outcome. The chances of success with IVF are related to the number of attempts the couple has. However, the cost and complexity of various IVF procedure and monitoring techniques limit the number of attempts any particular couple undergoes, thus reducing the chances of success. Simplification of IVF will encourage more couples to undergo more attempts and hence increase the overall chances of success.

MANAGEMENT EXPERIENCE
I believe that management skills are as necessary as clinical skills in successfully running any medical establishment. I participate actively and fully in the management of the ACU, including budgetary planning, inter-departmental coordination, management of staff and patients' complaints management.
