Dr. Inan's Online Publications for Medical Doctors Polycystic ovarian disease Terminology· A syndrome characterized by clinical, pathological and laboratory manifestations
· It was first described by Stein and Leventhal in 1935 who first described : amenorrhea and PCO .
· The syndrome is misnamed in the sense that not all patients have cystic ovaries .
· The clinical definition of PCO is characterised by 4 symptoms :
1. Infertility 2. obesity 3. Hirsutism 4. Amenorrhea or oligomenorrhea
· In a newly accepted definition of PCO , the diagnostic criteria include hyper- androgenism and chronic anovulation and exclude secondary causes such as neoplasm , hyperprolactinemia and adult onset CAH .
Incidence :
- Up to 5 % of patients attending a gynecology clinics
- most patients present in the 3rd decade
