Grief is the natural emotional response to loss and is a complex amalgam of painful effects including sadness, anger, hopelessness, guilt and despair (Raphael, 1984). When Parkes (1970) studied the underlying pattern of grief in a group of London widows he observed four phases to the mourning and associated feelings.
