Intimate Relationship

A couple's continued communication regarding their intimacy during pregnancy
is no different than any other aspect of their lives together; and it
can help the couple to grow stronger in their relationship. Pregnancy
is a very emotional time for women and with the added "physical" changes
it can alter her feelings about physical intimacy. For some women there
may be stronger desires for physical intimacy, but for other women there
may a decline. It depends on the woman, her attitudes about her developing
mothering role, her physical discomforts, and her energy level. In addition,
if she is having a high risk pregnancy there may be medical restrictions
placed on her as well. Men also undergo many emotional changes during
pregnancy as well. How a man may see himself as a father and his partner
as a mother may have an impact on his libido as well. Some men feel they
may "hurt" the baby (or his wife), or perhaps culturally there may be
prohibitions during certain times of the pregnancy as well. If the pregnancy
is continuing normally, and the couple communicate their needs, feelings,
and desires in their relationship then there can be mutual respect for
each other during this "special" time. Showing love by being considerate
to one another (for example exchanging a back-rub or foot massage) can
be very satisfying as well as holding hands, spending quiet time alone
listening to music or taking walks, and even cuddling together can do
much to enhance a loving relationship.
