Introduction
|
| This is a group of disorders grouped under one name ( a syndrome). This group of disorders have been erroneously attributed to the ovary. Knowing the real facts it will not take us long to discover that the ovary itself is a victim of the disorder and not its cause. So what is the real cause of these disorders? Good question. Well up till now no one really knows the answer. However several people made great efforts in this respect. The medical literature is full of theories trying to solve the mystery behind this syndrome. First of all we should handle this syndrome in a clinical fashion sort of speak. Why will the patient seek medical advice? The woman will present usually with irregular cycles, mainly delayed cycles interrupted by unpredictable episodes of bleeding which may be prolonged. This is annoying to the patient and least to say worrisome. Problems may go deeper if she is trying to seek pregnancy. This may be far fetched in this situation. For young teens, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) may be a different story. Apart from the irregular cycles these young girls may present with obesity (excessive body weight) that is distributed mainly within the trunk together with concentrated fat around the waist line (tummy fat). Others may present with excessive hair growth - condition known as hirsutism. This is mainly distributed in areas girls are not accustomed to like the face (beard and mostash areas) and the chest wall. Ironically , a quite common complaint for all age groups may be excessive scalp hair loss. |
