Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome
|
| Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome is a complication found to be not uncommon in PCOS patients treated with OI medications. It is characterised by profuse exudation of abdominal fluid that may reach more than 5 liters. This fluid is rich in proteins. This may well affect the blood protein content. Generalised oedema and haemoconcentraion may soon insue (blood becomes more viscid and slowly circulating). This invites intravascular thrombosis (clot formation). If the cerebral vessels are affected, cerebral infarcts will form leading to hemi-pariesis or paralysis. Abdominal distention, thoracic fluid collection, oligouria (drop in urine output) and respiratory embarrassment may complicate the condition even further and hospitalization is urgently required. Intravenous fluidand albumin may be life saving in these conditions. |
