PCOS runs in families
|
| It may be worth mentioning in this respect that the physician and patients should bear in mind that recent medical literature have established a familial relationship in developing this disorder. A mother having PCOS should watch for its signs and symptoms in her daughter and seek early medical advice. Menstrual irregularities since puberty may be the first symptom of the disease. Early treatment of PCOS may decrease the chance of developing obesity, hirsutism and disfiguring acne. Another point to be noted is that PCOS patients and their female offspring may be at increased risk of developing diabetes later on in their lives or under stressful conditions such as pregnancy or corticosteroid therapy. The diagnosis of PCOS thus should be based primarily on the medical history including family history of diabetes and similar condition among the females of the family such as the mother, aunts and sisters. Careful examination of the whole body including the fat distribution, body mass index (BMI=weight/sq.(height in meters). Ultrasound examination and blood hormone levels confirm the condition. |
