Does Obesity have a role?
|
| Obesity may commonly be associated with PCOS. Fat cells act as an aberrant source of estrogen and may disrupt the feed back mechanism responsible for the regulation of FSH and LH release from the pituitary gland. This may further aggravate the condition. In similar conditions, the pituitary may erroneously secrete ACTH in amounts that cause over activity of the adrenal gland reflecting a condition similar PCOS. In addition excessive body fat may cause insulin resistance. This condition may be expressed within the ovarian tissues leading to excessive androgen production. The excess androgen produced by the ovary and the adrenal is converted in the fatty tissues into estrogen further suppressing FSH production by the pituitary gland. |
