PCOS treatment
To treat this condition the general practitioner should refer the patient to a specialized gynecologic endocrinologist. The treatment of PCOS should be individualised and needs understanding of the pathophysiology of the disease as well as mastering of all treatment options. The hormonal disturbance as a complex group of disorders needs adequate and careful explanation rapped in a reassuring tone. Treatment should be based on the patient's goals and age group. A young girl with hirsutism and irregular menstruation will be treated in a different fashion than an older woman seeking fertility. However, in any instance, it should be clear to the patient that this condition SHOULD be treated regardless of her goals. PCOS long term effects include obesity, lipid metabolism imbalance, carbohydrate metabolism imbalance with subsequent potential to develop diabetes. Hirsutism, acne with its associated disfigurement may cause long term residue of the disease. In long standing, untreated cases uterine cancer may insue. The patient should be encouraged to share in the decisions, plan and schedule of treatment whatever her goals are. This may empower her, if motivated, to increase her chances of success and feelings of well-being. and add to the chances of success under the drive of motivation.
